God asked Adam, “ Where are you?” The question is not asked in geographical sense .It implies a relational significance, with the aim of bringing Adam from hiding into a relationship. The purpose of the question was to enable man to realize his loss and help him to seek the way to be restored. In Hebrew the whole question is compressed and conveyed in a small single word AYEKA which means 'Where are you?'
Adam had an appointment with God every day. God wants us to meet Him on a regular basis. Meetings strengthen relationships. When Adam missed his appointment, god asked this question to make him realize that he has allowed a breach in his relationship with God. Unless that breach is set right, he can not enjoy fellowship with God. We also get ourselves into such breached situations. God intervenes and asks the question, that should make us realize our failure.
Usually this question WHERE ARE YOU is asked when person who loses his way, asks for direction. Such a person can find help only when he realizes that he is lost. He also should know the location where he is lost. We need to know our weakness and identify our vulnerable spot, so that we can be guided by God. Our weak spots lead to our failure. We need to first locate our weakness, in order to come out of them. We are progressing on a spiritual realm..We need to know where we are and how far we have progressed in integrity, patience and love so that we can grow and lead an effective life. Zacheus realized his weakness and corrected himself. Only when we identify our weakness, we will seek God’s protection and guidance.
Our happiness and deliverance depend on our response to this question. We can either ignore this question or answer with a careful introspection. Adam portrayed himself as a victim of the choices made by others. Hence he started blaming Eve. When we begin to blame, we may not be ready for self examination and therefore lose the chance for constructive changes. Adam tried to hide behind the 'cult of victimhood'. One can justify or blame but the only way to reconstructed life of happiness is a frank acceptance of the fact that we are lost and therefore need to know the way back to relationship with God.
