ENRICHING RESOLUTIONS

Dr. (Mrs.) Edriana Jeyasingh

On the first day of the New Year , many fresh resolutions are made: some are broken very soon, some are followed with great commitment. There are four areas of concern which we have to handle with care and caution and make the necessary resolutions in order to enjoy peace and calm in this new year. If the weak spots are identified and treated well, one can enjoy the abundant life which our lord has promised to give.

1.The first pitfall one has to avoid is PRIDE. Christmas enforces the concept of humility to every one who cares to follow the example of our Saviour who chose to be born in a lowly manger. In Proverbs 18:12 , we read ,“ Before his downfall, a man’s heart is proud but humility comes before honour.” ( Pride ends in destruction. Humility ends is honour.) Pride blocks spontaneous delight in simple things, ruins innocent joy and destroys relationships. Omission of petty things is magnified out of proportion.

2.The next evil that has to be encountered with discretion is JEALOUSY. It is the twin brother of Pride. When one has too much, he is proud: when he lacks what others have, he is jealous. The pleasure of watching others prosper, is killed by jealousy. When bloated selfishness enters, peace and joy flee. “ A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.” (Pro. 14:30) a relaxed attitude lengthens a man’s life. Jealousy rots it away.

3. RESENTMENT is a venomous potion that kills people gradually. Life is either destroyed or crippled, when resentment injects its venom into every thought, gesture and word of its victim. When we forgive, our sinews become relaxed and we become healthy.

4.The fourth area of concern is FEAR OF PEOPLE. ‘ Fear of men will prove to be a snare. But whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe.” (Pro.29:25) One who fears God, need not fear people.

In this New Year, shall we resolve to exercise caution in these four areas and seek God’s help in overcoming these debilitating weaknesses. Of course, we can claim victory through the blood of Christ.

May God bless us all in the New Year.
