John 8:31-32 "Jesus said "If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."
When Jesus told Pilate, “Everyone on the side of truth listens to me,” Pilate asked , “What is truth?” Pilate didn’t really want to know the answer to his own question. We should ask Pilate’s question of ourselves: What is truth?
Mark Twain said a lie can travel halfway around the world while truth is still lacing up her boots. Lie finds a smooth entry into hearts and travels into people’s acceptance easily while it is hard to accept truth which also hurts.
But to be free, we must know the truth: We need to know the truth about ourselves and others in order to be free. When we do not know the truth about ourselves either we underestimate ourselves or overestimate ourselves. Both lead to unhappy consequences. Fear or pride hinder our process of being the true self. Only when we own our defects and merits we can be free. Acceptance of self is of primary importance to lead a free life. Hypocrisy is rampant in a society where each one is reluctant to be his own self. Only truth can set these people who struggle in bondage and are enslaved to the driving urge to impress others by putting on masks.
Next we need to have a clear idea about the role people play in our life. If we are true to God and claim to have understood God well, we need not worry about what others could do for us. What God wants us to have no one can snatch from others and what He does not want us to have no one can give us. Blaming people for what does not happen in our life does not seem to be wise and Godly. People are just agents in the hands of God to make things happen the way God wishes. So why accuse the innocent agents who act according to the will of God.
How then can we know the truth?
To know the truth, we must be His disciples. To follow Jesus, we must live in His Word. What does it mean to live in His Word? It means at least two things. First, we must regularly study and apply the teachings of Jesus to our lives! The second thing is this; we must live our lives in Him, having Him living in us.
"If you live in Me (my Word), you are truly followers who know Me (the Truth), and I will set you free."
May God help us to know the truth.
